Fishing is a skill that keeps growing for as long as you do it. This is an article in collaboration with Charter Fishing Destin.  Learn how to get a feel for how to best catch the best fish out there. But it can also be frustrating for beginners, or even pros when you just can’t seem to get a single bite.

While there is no particular right or wrong way to fish, there are some great fishing tips that will make sure you have the best chances of catching something on your next trip out. Fishing experts have no shortage of tips and advice for beginners and hobbyists alike, so below we have listed what we feel are the 10 best tips for any angler of any skill or experience level.

1. Make Smart Purchases

The first tip starts before you even get out of the house. You probably want to go for the most expensive and fancy rod and supplies out there, but making smart purchases with your fishing gear can make or break your fishing experience. Not everyone has money to burn on their hobbies, but you do not have to break the bank to get great supplies. Do your research on the best and most loved equipment in your price range before just settling on the flashiest option. A good setup leads to a good experience.

2. Keep a Variety of Lures on Hand

You can never know exactly what fish will be attracted to on the day you are fishing. Unpredictable factors such as weather can make fish picky about what they will bite. Always keep a good variety of bait and lures on hand so you can try different things if you aren’t getting any bites. Not to mention trying new things can be a fun learning experience.

3. Use The Best Bait

Live bait is always your best bet for a bite. Check local stores and tackle shops to see what the fish are biting. Fish almost always prefer live bait so you can’t go wrong picking up some to try. Be aware of what type of fish are around and prepare the correct bait to lure them in.

4. Practice Your Cast

A bad cast is the quickest way to an unsuccessful fishing trip. Even if you are experienced there is always more to learn. Practice makes perfect so get out and start practicing. With a perfect cast you are sure to get a great catch.

5. Be Aware of Local Laws

Every state can have different laws when it comes to fishing, especially with the size of fish you have to throwback. Always keep a measuring device on hand when fishing. If you are going on a trip to somewhere you don’t usually cast, read up on the law beforehand so you can be prepared.

6. Pay Attention

This one seems simple, but a lot of people will take it too fast when waiting for a bite. Don’t scout for the next spot while waiting and pull your lure in too soon. Pay attention to the water and what is biting at the moment. Getting too excited for the next thing is a sure-fire way to miss a great catch.

7. Stay Quiet

Fish have very sensitive hearing and maybe smarter than you think. They can hear you if you are loud and will know to stay away. You won’t get any fish by making a racket, so stay focused and quiet and let them come to you.

8. Try a Change of Speed

If you know you have got the best bait and lure to catch local fish but they still won’t bite, try changing your speed. Fish can be picky about when they will chase their prey and when they prefer a slow catch. Try going slower or faster and see what works best.

9. Downsize

If the fish aren’t biting you may want to try different size bait and lures. The fish in your area might want smaller bait, so try switching it up if you aren’t getting a lot of bites.

10. Try a New Lure

If you still can’t get any bites, try using the one lure you never use. Or go out and buy a new one. Maybe the fish and you just need a change of pace to get back out there and make the best catch yet.
